Map a Biography by Decisions Instead of Dates

When this method helps

Use this when a chronological biography is accurate but hard to remember as a causal story.

Dates locate events; decisions reveal pressure and change. Keeping alternatives visible also prevents hindsight from making outcomes inevitable.

Method

Build the note

1. Choose a page where the subject faces a consequential choice.

2. Record the options the biography says were available at that time.

3. Link the immediate consequence and a later reassessment without importing facts the subject could not know.

In 1919, page 133 shows a choice between two appointments; page 170 records the immediate cost, while later fame stays outside the original decision frame.
