A paper-first reading field guide
Map a Book’s Timeline Without Rewriting the Plot
Record when an event occurs, where the book reveals it, and the page that changes your understanding. Use short cues instead of retelling scenes.
Books often reveal events out of order. A small two-line timeline keeps sequence clear without turning notes into a second plot.
Step 1
Anchor the location
Record the page or chapter before interpreting the moment. Add the current reading boundary when later knowledge could change the note.
Step 2
Event time
Name the event in five words or fewer.
Step 3
Reveal page
Record where the reader first learns it.
Step 4
Meaning changed
Add a later page only when it changes the event’s meaning.
