A paper-first reading field guide
Mark a Definition Before Examples Multiply
Save the author’s operational definition in your own words, then record one fitting example and one boundary case.
Examples are easier to remember than definitions. A three-field note keeps the term from silently expanding beyond the author’s claim.
Step 1
Anchor the location
Record the page or chapter before interpreting the moment. Add the current reading boundary when later knowledge could change the note.
Step 2
Working definition
Paraphrase the usable definition and page.
Step 3
Fits
Choose one example that clearly meets it.
Step 4
Boundary case
Mark a case that tests or limits the definition.
