A spoiler-aware discussion card
Prepare for Book Club in Five Minutes
Choose one Discuss tab, one Felt tab, and one Keep tab. Turn them into a question, a reaction, and a takeaway. Leave Clue tabs aside until the group agrees on a spoiler boundary.
Book-club preparation can become a second reading assignment. This scan is intentionally smaller: three marked moments, one sentence each, and a clear rule for anything that might spoil later chapters.
0:00–0:30
Set the spoiler boundary first
Write the last chapter or page everyone agreed to finish. If editions differ, use a chapter or scene instead of relying on page numbers. Anything beyond that boundary stays off the card.
0:30–2:00
Turn one Discuss tab into an open question
Choose the Discuss marker with the most room for disagreement. Rewrite it as a question that invites evidence from the book instead of asking the group to guess what you already believe.
- Prefer “What changed your view of this choice?” over “Was this character wrong?”
- Keep your own answer off the card until the conversation begins.
- Do not copy a passage unless the group actually needs the wording and you have it available lawfully.
2:00–3:30
Name one Felt reaction without defending it
Pick one moment that changed your emotional temperature. Write the reaction and its immediate cause in plain language. The point is to remember the response you had while reading, not to prove that everyone should share it.
3:30–4:30
Carry one Keep idea into the room
Choose one idea, image, or decision you still want to examine after the plot details fade. Reduce it to a short phrase that another reader can respond to without seeing your private notes.
- One takeaway is enough; a list turns the card back into homework.
- Use your own words so the card remains useful even when the book is not open.
4:30–5:00
Quarantine Clue tabs until spoilers are allowed
Clue markers are useful precisely because they connect early details to later meaning. Keep them on a separate line marked “after the boundary.” Bring them into the discussion only after everyone confirms that later events are fair game.

If the scan takes longer, make it smaller
Do not review every tab. Choose a different set of three only when the first set produces no real question, reaction, or takeaway. The goal is to arrive ready to listen and respond, not to deliver a report on the book.
