A paper-first reading field guide

Record When a Red Herring Is Retired

Use three linked fields: earlier theory, contrary page, and status now. Keep each field brief and attach the page or chapter landmark that supports it.

Close an earlier theory when the text provides contrary evidence, while preserving why it once looked plausible. A compact three-anchor trail keeps the note useful when you return later or discuss it with someone using another edition.

Step 1

Anchor the location

Record the page or chapter before interpreting the moment. Add the current reading boundary when later knowledge could change the note.

Step 2

Earlier theory

Save the page evidence that made the theory reasonable.

Step 3

Contrary page

Anchor the later fact that conflicts with it.

Step 4

Status now

Mark the theory rejected, narrowed, or still partly open.
