A practical reading method

Save a Bedtime Reading Stop Without Losing the Mood

Record the last fully understood page rather than the page where your eyes stopped moving. Name the current emotional temperature in one or two words. Add one open thread phrased only from information available at that page.

Use this when bedtime reading ends because you are tired rather than because the chapter provides a clean stop. Sleep often preserves plot fragments but loses the tone that made them matter. A three-part cue restores the reading state quickly.

Use case

When this method helps

Use this when bedtime reading ends because you are tired rather than because the chapter provides a clean stop.

Sleep often preserves plot fragments but loses the tone that made them matter. A three-part cue restores the reading state quickly.

Method

Build the note

1. Record the last fully understood page rather than the page where your eyes stopped moving.

2. Name the current emotional temperature in one or two words.

3. Add one open thread phrased only from information available at that page.

Example

See the boundary in practice

Page 73—uneasy quiet—does the unopened drawer belong to Mara or her father?

Quality check

Before you trust the note

The cue should be readable in seconds the next night and contain no guesses from half-read pages.
