Separate a Character Goal From Their Stated Reason
Use two page-linked lines: the visible goal and the stated reason. Add a third line only for later behavior that supports or contradicts the stated reason.
Goals and explanations are not always the same thing. Keeping them separate prevents interpretation from becoming remembered dialogue.
Step 1
Anchor the location
Record the page or chapter before interpreting the moment. Add the current reading boundary when later knowledge could change the note.
Step 2
Visible goal
Name the outcome the character actively pursues on the page.
Step 3
Stated reason
Paraphrase the explanation the character gives without judging it.
Step 4
Later behavior
Record one later action as support, contradiction, or still unclear.
