Distinguish Correlation From a Proposed Mechanism

Use three linked fields: observed relation, proposed process, and needed test. Keep each field brief and attach the page or chapter landmark that supports it.

Keep an observed relationship separate from the process offered to explain why it might occur. A compact three-anchor trail keeps the note useful when you return later or discuss it with someone using another edition.

Step 1

Anchor the location

Record the page or chapter before interpreting the moment. Add the current reading boundary when later knowledge could change the note.

Step 2

Observed relation

Record the variables or events that move together.

Step 3

Proposed process

Paraphrase the mechanism the author proposes.

Step 4

Needed test

Name the evidence that would distinguish that process from an alternative.
