Iris-folding resizing
Resize an Iris-Folding Pattern Without Redrawing Every Line
Do not resize the finished PDF in the printer dialog. Return to the original or authorized aperture, set the intended output dimensions once, regenerate the numbered structure at that size, export a new calibrated PDF, and print at 100% or Actual Size. Measure the calibration mark and build one physical sample before teaching, sharing, or selling the revision.
Changing the physical size is a pattern revision, not a print shortcut. A clean revision keeps the aperture, numbering, export, and physical check tied to the same target dimensions.
Start from source
Keep one authorized aperture as the master
Save the original or licensed aperture separately from every generated pattern. Give the master a stable name and record the intended finished width and height. That prevents an already scaled print file from becoming the source for another revision.
If the customer or class needs a new card size, duplicate the revision record and change the target dimensions there. Do not overwrite the last checked version.
- Source artwork is original, licensed, or public domain.
- Target width and height are written in physical units.
- The previous checked export remains unchanged.
Regenerate
Create numbering at the target size
Generate the fold structure from the master aperture at the new dimensions. Review the numbered preview at the intended output size. Small revisions can make labels, fold spans, and the center too crowded even when the outline still looks correct.
Keep geometry fixed while testing size. Changing triangle, square, or pentagon structure at the same time would make it impossible to tell whether scale or geometry caused the result.
- Numbering remains readable without zooming.
- The fold order progresses consistently.
- The center and narrow corners remain buildable.
Export
Name the revision before printing
Export a new PDF and include the physical dimensions and revision identity in the filename. If a separate cutting or editing workflow needs vectors, export SVG from the same revision rather than rebuilding it later from a different source.
A useful filename states the aperture, geometry, target size, and revision—for example: tulip-square-5x7-r03.pdf. The name should tell a teacher, seller, or customer which physical pattern they are holding.
Verify
Print at actual size and measure the page
Choose 100% or Actual Size and disable Fit, Shrink, and Scale to Page. Measure the printed calibration mark with a physical ruler. Printer defaults differ, so a correct PDF is not proof that the paper output stayed correct.
Build one complete sample before distributing the revision. The sample is where label size, strip width, center closure, and sequence clarity become observable rather than assumed.
- Calibration mark matches its stated measurement.
- Aperture fits the intended card or teaching template.
- One physical build completes without ambiguous numbering.
