Triangle vs. Square vs. Pentagon Iris Folding
Triangle geometry creates a three-sided rotational rhythm, square creates a familiar four-sided progression, and pentagon produces a denser five-sided cadence. Choose by comparing the numbered preview at the intended print size: the best option is the one whose folds, center, color sequence, and labels remain clear for the maker who will build it.
The aperture can stay the same while the internal rhythm changes substantially. Geometry is a design and teaching choice, not a universal quality ranking.
Triangle
Use three-sided rhythm for a direct, open sequence
Triangle geometry repeats across three sides. In many apertures that produces a strong directional spiral and a sequence that is comparatively easy to explain. It can suit classroom demonstrations or patterns where the maker should understand the rotation quickly.
Inspect the center and the longest fold spans. A visually open structure can still create crowded intersections in a narrow or sharply angled aperture.
Square
Use four-sided progression for familiar balance
Square geometry creates a four-sided cadence that many makers recognize immediately. It often gives the pattern a balanced, architectural feel and can map naturally to four color groups.
Familiar does not mean automatically simpler. Check how the square rotation meets the aperture corners and whether numbering stays legible near the center at the intended size.
Pentagon
Use five-sided cadence for denser movement
Pentagon geometry adds another side to the repeating rhythm. The result can feel denser and more intricate, which may suit a distinctive pattern line or an experienced maker seeking a different visual cadence.
Density increases the need for careful preview inspection. Labels, fold lines, and color changes must remain readable on the physical page, not only while zoomed on screen.
Compare
Judge the same aperture at the same scale
Generate each candidate using the same aperture and target size. Compare the center, longest strips, crowded areas, numbering, and color sequence. Changing geometry and scale at the same time makes it harder to understand which decision improved the pattern.
A teacher may favor fewer explanations and large labels. A pattern seller may favor a distinctive cadence. An individual maker may simply prefer one composition. State the intended maker before choosing.

- Color groups are easy to distinguish.

Validate
Build one physical test before release
Export the candidate pattern, print at actual size, and build one sample. Physical paper exposes label size, strip width, printer scaling, and sequence confusion that a clean screen preview can hide.
Save each geometry as a separate revision rather than overwriting the comparison. Descriptive filenames preserve why one option was selected and make later teaching or customer support clearer.
