A paper-first reading field guide
Separate a Narrator's Memory From Event Chronology
Use three linked fields: memory order, event order, and gap. Keep each field brief and attach the page or chapter landmark that supports it.
Keep the order of remembered scenes distinct from the order in which the story's events occurred. A compact three-anchor trail keeps the note useful when you return later or discuss it with someone using another edition.
Step 1
Anchor the location
Record the page or chapter before interpreting the moment. Add the current reading boundary when later knowledge could change the note.
Step 2
Memory order
Record when the narrator recalls the scene.
Step 3
Event order
Place the event in the story chronology using page evidence.
Step 4
Gap
Mark what the distance between recall and event may affect.
