Track a Case Study Through a Nonfiction Claim
Record the general claim, the case’s specific role, and the boundary beyond which the case should not be generalized. Revisit the link when the author returns to the case.
A vivid case can carry more weight in memory than the surrounding evidence. A role-and-boundary note keeps it in proportion.
Step 1
Anchor the location
Record the page or chapter before interpreting the moment. Add the current reading boundary when later knowledge could change the note.

General claim
Paraphrase the claim before reading the case as evidence.
Step 3
Case role
Mark whether the case introduces, illustrates, tests, or complicates the claim.

Generalization limit
Write one population, condition, or conclusion the case does not establish.
