A paper-first reading field guide
Untangle a Confusing Book Timeline
Give each note two positions: when the event happened in the story and when the reader learned it. Sort by event only after both positions are recorded.
Nonlinear books often confuse event order with disclosure order. Preserving both keeps the author’s structure visible.
Step 1
Name the event
Use a short paraphrase without copying plot text or adding conclusions.
- EVENT: ____________________
Step 2
Record story position
Write the best time marker the book supports: year, age, before or after another event, or unknown.
- HAPPENED: ____________________
Step 3
Record disclosure position
Add the page or chapter where the reader learned it.
- REVEALED: chapter ____ / page ____
Step 4
Keep unknowns visible
Use a question mark for uncertain order. Update only when the text supplies evidence.
