CH / STUDIOReading Journal: TabMap field guide

A paper-first reading field guide

Build a Lightweight Index for a Long Book

Choose at most five recurring labels, record page plus a short cue, and retire labels that do not help retrieval after three entries. The index earns its size by helping you return.

An unlimited index grows faster than its usefulness. A fixed label budget keeps the map searchable.

Step 1

Anchor the location

Record the page or chapter before interpreting the moment. Add the current reading boundary when later knowledge could change the note.

Step 2

Five labels max

Pick labels tied to decisions you expect to make later, such as question, evidence, or return.

Step 3

Page + short cue

Write the page and a three-to-five-word cue instead of copying text.

Step 4

Retire weak labels

After three entries, remove any label that does not speed up retrieval.
